Co-operatives for Development
The College is delighted to announce the launch of a new research programme, Co-operatives for Development, with funding from the Department for International Development (DfID).
The programme aims to support and strengthen the contribution that co-operatives make to poverty reduction globally and the promotion of equitable and values based strategies for development.
Based at the College in Manchester, the programme will undertake and stimulate research, develop evidence based policy inputs and produce a wide range of publications. There will be particular focus on Africa with support for Co-operative Colleges and other co-operative organisations there.
We hope the programme can begin to help remedy the lack of recent research and evidence which currently hampers the development of effective policies and development interventions in support of co-operatives in the developing world.
The programme will be headed by Dr Linda Shaw who will be supported by a research officer, interns' other support staff and a group of associate researchers.
Work streams already identified for the programme include work on Beyond Fair Trade - strategies for co-operative development, gender issues for African co-operatives, governance issues and tourism.
Regular briefings will be produced together with a dedicated website and a range of publications.
