Archive Collaborates in Online Exhibition

The National Co-operative Archive has collaborated with the Working Class Movement Library, the People's History Museum and the Bishopsgate Institute to develop an exciting online exhibition that charts the progress of women From Kitchen Table to Conference Table.

The exhibition follows the progress of women from the private sphere to the public sphere through their politicisation, using a timeline and case studies showcasing the holdings of the three contributing institutions. Learn about the Co-op Women's Guild; Women, the Vote and Labour; how the 1984/5 Miners Strike affected women; and see how much you could buy with a woman clerk's wages in 1922.

The organisers were honoured to receive a contribution from The Rt Hon Baroness Boothroyd OM PC - perhaps better known as Betty Boothroyd. She entered Parliament as the Labour Member of Parliament (MP) for West Bromwich in a by-election in 1973 and served her country tirelessly for 27 years. She became a Deputy Speaker in 1987 and in 1992 she was elected Speaker, being the first woman ever to hold the position. She retired from Parliament in 2000.

They hope that you will enjoy your travels through the last 140 or so years covered by the case studies as much as the institutions enjoyed compiling them.

You can view the website at www.politicalwomen.org.uk.
